Everything is sealed on all six faces before assembly, end grain included, because the rot always starts where you cannot see. None of this costs much at build time and all of it is expensive to retrofit.

A pipe-and-cedar gate on a long approach drive sits in full sun with no shade for any part of the day, and boards on the west face will silver two or three years before the ones facing the house. We build those with the cladding screwed rather than glued to the frame, so the exposed face can be replaced on its own.
We also rebuild rather than replace. Re-slatting silvered boards onto a sound frame, splicing a bottom rail, or welding a steel frame into a wood gate that never had one are all far cheaper than a new build. Reusing a sound frame also means reusing the foundation, which on a limestone lot is the part of the original job that cost the most. That is worth checking before anybody quotes you a new gate.
