We lay oversized sleeves under the drive and through the column cores while the excavation is already open, one for gate control, one for lighting, one spare. A sleeve installed on the day the hole is open costs almost nothing. The same sleeve retrofitted means cutting a finished driveway.
We restore as often as we build. Old ironwork on tired columns is usually worth saving, and re-anchoring a restored gate to a properly cored core beats commissioning a replacement by a wide margin.
